Dad cautioned everyone to keep a cool head and took control over this grievous situation, because it was none other than the police who had come threatening to break down our door if we didn’t respond to their satisfaction.

“You three stay put and don’t come downstairs for anything. I mean it, Frances, you and Lily. And, Paul, stay up here. Okay?”

Straight away and worried beyond belief, Mon answered, while Paul and I nodded in the affirmative.

“I will, but I can’t even begin to imagine what they want. But like I said, you all stay put. Andrew, I want you to come downstairs with me to answer the door.”

Andrew answered like the respectful young man he was becoming. “Sure, Dad.”
