Dad cautioned everyone to keep a cool head and took control over this grievous situation, because it was none other than the police who had come threatening to break down our door if we didn’t respond to their satisfaction.
“You three stay put and don’t come downstairs for anything. I mean it, Frances—you and Lily. And, Paul, stay up here. Okay?”
Straight away and worried beyond belief, Mom answered, while Paul and I nodded in the affirmative.
