Duly Noted: Jericho is among the oldest cities in the world, and it is also the city with the oldest known defensive wall. Archaeologists have unearthed the remains of more than 20 successive settlements in Jericho, the first of which dates back 11:000 years (to 9000 Bce), almost to the very beginning of Holocene epoch of earth’s history. Copious springs in and around the city have attracted human habitation for thousands of years. Jericho is described in the Bible as the city of palm trees.
Jericho is located 258 meters (846 ft) below sea level in an oasis in Wadi Qelt in the Jordan Valley, which makes it the lowest city in the world.

Jericho’s name is Biblical Hebrew, is generally thought to derive from the Canaanite word ‘fragrant,’ but other theories hold that it originate in the Canaanite word ‘moon’ or the name of the lunar deity Yarikh, for whom the city was an early center of worship.

Chemosh was an ancient god worshipped by the Moabites, whose name possibly means “destroyer” or “fish-god.” Chemosh is associated with the goddess Ashtaraoth. Holy Scriptures: Leviticus 18:26, Ye shall therefore keep my statutes and my judgments, and shall not commit any of these abominations; neither any of your own nation, nor any stranger that sojurneth with you.

Ancient Israel

Duly Noted: In the time of King David, Bethlehem was his birthplace and hometown, a small farming village with a rich family history. It was also the place where his ancestor Ruth met and married Boaz, and where David himself tended sheep before becoming king. Bethlehem’s significance as David’s city is further highlighted by the prophecy that the messiah would be a descendant of David, born in Bethlehem.
Holy Scriptures: Isaiah 53:1-12, Who hath believed our report? and to whom is the arm of the LORD revealed? For he shall grow up before him as a tender plant, and as a root out of a dry ground: he hath no form nor comeliness; and when we shall see him, there is no beauty that we should desire him. He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not.
Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted. But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his strips we are healed. All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of us all.
He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth: he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he openeth not his mouth. He was taken from prison and from judgment: and who shall declare his generation? for he was cut off out of the land of the living: for the transgression of my people was he stricken. And he made his grave with the wicked, and with the rich in his death; because he had done no violence, neither was any deceit in his mouth.
Yet it pleased the LORD to bruise him; he hath put him to grief: when thou shalt make his soul an offering for sin, he shall see his seed, he shall prolong his days, and the pleasure of the LORD shall prosper in his hand. He shall see of the travail of his soul, and shall be satisfied: by his knowledge shall my righteous servant justify many; for he shall bear their iniquities. Therefore will I divide him a portion with the great., and he shall divide the spoil with the strong; because he hath poured out his soul unto death: and he was numbered with the transgressors; and he bear the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors.
Micah 5:2,But thou Bethlehem Ephratah, though thou be little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of thee shall he come forth unto me that is to be ruler in Israel; whose goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting.

Duly Noted: Understanding Biblical Sacrifice, A group of people called the kohanim (“priests”) were the only ones who were allowed to make sacrifices to bring people close to God. The first kohen was Aaron, and his sons became kohanim after him. The kohanim would make sacrifices for themselves, for other individual Jews, or for the entire Jewish people. There were three basic kinds of korbanot: Animals, grain, and money. Animals would be killed, grain would be burned, and money would be donated. Sometimes, when a person didn’t have any animals to sacrifice, they would offer grain or money instead (see for example Leviticus 5:18, and 14:21.)
source: myjewishlearning.com, Today, we know that there are many other ways we can draw close to God that don’t involve killing animals. In Particular, Judasism teaches that prayer is a replacement for animal sacrifices.
